On December 3rd, 2024, Afya Research Africa (ARA) joined the world in commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with an inclusive event in Mukuru Kwa Reuben’s informal settlement in Nairobi.

The gathering brought together persons with disabilities and their caregivers from our safe spaces in Kibera and Mukuru kwa Rueben, aligning with this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

The event highlighted our year-long Make Way program, a key initiative empowering girls and women with disabilities on matters Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in informal settlements.

Beyond education, the program has equipped the participants with practical skills, such as making reusable sanitary towels and diapers. This hands-on approach not only seeks to foster self-reliance but also addresses the pressing need for sustainable solutions within the community.

Recognizing the impact of ARA’s work, Future Mukiri, a disability champion from Mukuru Kwa Reuben, said, “Organizations like ARA are doing remarkable work in informal settlements. By collaborating with us to develop solutions that are truly relevant to our needs, they guide us in paving the way for lasting change in our communities.”

While celebrating progress, participants also highlighted ongoing challenges, including information inaccessibility and persistent stigma and discrimination in both economic and social settings, which leave many feeling excluded and hesitant to seek help.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Frida Nduati, a Member of the Board of Directors and a representative of persons with disabilities at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, emphasized the importance of accessible services in empowering persons with disabilities.

She also acknowledged the challenges posed by the healthcare system, which often exposes this vulnerable community to significant barriers in accessing proper care.

This year’s IDPD was a powerful reminder of the progress we have made and the work that remains to build an inclusive society where no one is left behind.
