Access to vaccines is an initiative towards promoting access to vaccines to under-served rural populations to strengthen primary healthcare systems and improve pandemic preparedness and response.The program is implemented by ARA and funded by Pfizer Foundation.
- Enhance access to childhood vaccination
- Expand access to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
- Promote access to the pilot RTS,S malaria vaccine
- Promote pneumococcal polysaccharide access for children with sickle cell anemia (SCA).
- Promote access to COVID-19 vaccines by priority populations
Results:
- 6,495 children immunized, 2,254 complete KEPI schedule and RTS,S malaria vaccine
- 1,897 adolescent girls received full dose HPV1&2 vaccine
- Only 32 children with SCA got PSA vaccine
- Over 25,000 screened for COVID, 2,106 received vaccine
Lesson learnt
- Partnership with County Governments are key to achieve immunization targets
- Community health promoters key in immunization coverage
- Link with other projects achieves greater health outcomes
- Most children do not have a definitive diagnosis of SCA
- It is difficult to access Polysaccharide vaccine
